Tooth extraction: the last resort for a severely damaged or infected tooth

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw bone. The most common reason for extraction is tooth damage due to breakage, decay or infection.

Why do you need to have teeth extracted? Why get a tooth extracted?

There are numerous reasons why a toot might be better out than in. These include:

  • Severe damage or infection to the tooth
  • The tooth obstructs the growth of others
  • Stubborn baby teeth
  • To make room for the teeth to be shifted when undergoing orthodontic treatment
  • Radiation therapy on the head or neck may cause the teeth to need extraction
  • Drugs that weaken the immune system often cause teeth to become infected and need extraction
  • Wisdom teeth are routinely removed due to their painful eruption and disruption of an individual’s oral health

Infected and damaged teeth are not only painful; they pose a risk to your overall oral health. If they are unable to be treated by other means (crowns or fillings) it is best to have them removed.

Does tooth extraction hurt?

A tooth extraction should not be painful as you will be heavily numbed. You may feel pushing and pressure, but never any pain.
